Gopinath Mohanty (1914-91), one of the greatest modern Indian writers, published twenty-four novels, twelve collections of stories, two biographies, three plays and five volumes on tribal language and culture. Among his works available in English translation are Paraja (Oxford University Press, 1987), The Survivor (Macmillan, 1996), The Bed of Arrows and Other Stories (Sahitya Akademi, 1995), Laya Bi'/aya (Sahitya Akademi, 2008) and Stories (Grassroots, 2003). Recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Jnanpith Award, he was made a Fellow of the Sahitya Akademi and conferred the Padma Bhusan.
