Environmental pollution is one of the major problems faced by the world community, especially in the cities of developing countries which have experienced unbridled growth of population, urbanization, and industrialization. Municipal services - such as water supply and sanitation, drainage of storm water, management of solid and hazardous wastes, supply of adequate and safe food, and housing - are unable to keep pace with urban growth. The unplanned location of industries in and around urban areas and volume of traffic have caused serious pollution problems. All these factors have led to deteriorating environmental conditions, adversely impacting the health of the people. Environmental degradation in India has been caused by a variety of social, economic, institutional, and technological factors. The rapidly growing population, urbanization, industrial activities, and increasing use of pesticides and fossil fuels have all resulted in considerable deterioration in the quality and sustainability of the environment. This book examines the causes and consequences of environmental pollution in India and suggests remedial measures to tide over the looming threat to the health and welfare of people.

Author Bio:
Dr. C.V. Jayamani is presently Professor, School of Management Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT), Kochi, Kerala. He occupied several positions in his 30 years of academic and administrative career. He was the Dean of Faculty of Commerce, Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam; Finance Officer, University of Kerala; and Governing Board Member, Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Kozhikode. He has produced 5 Ph.Ds, published 5 books and written several articles in leading journals on health management, HRM and environmental management. Dr. R. Vasanthagopal is Associate Professor in the Post-graduate and Research Department of Commerce, The Cochin College, Kochi, Kerala. After his Masters Degree in Commerce from Kerala University, he obtained M.Phil in Commerce and Ph.D in Industrial Relations from the same University. He has successfully guided 6 candidates for Ph.D degrees and published 5 books. He has contributed several articles in peer reviewed national and international journals.
